These boxes open at the top for nest checks and on the side for easy cleaning in between clutches and at the end of the summer.  Inside the box is a mesh strip under the hole that we call the fledgling ladder.  It helps the baby birds climb up when they are ready to leave the nest.  You can check on a nest of babies until day 12 after hatching, then stop checking on them so the birds won't want to fledge too early.
